Let your creativity run free

Maria Black

Here is a brand that takes pride in styling men in pearl jewellery and dressing women in bold and sharp power jewellery. Maria Black is passionate about bringing you the pieces that let your styling be fun, personal and creative. Using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques, the sculptural shapes of precious metal designs are inspired by sources as diverse as everyday objects, people, subcultures and life moments.

About the designer and goldsmith

Maria Black

Maria Black founded her jewellery brand in 2010. However, we can say that she fell into jewellery making while she lived in Ibiza around 2003. From there her passion grew and in 2009 Maria graduated as a Goldsmith. Her first love for jewellery-making set her up for a love for designing. She was discovered by jewellery stores in London when she started selling her jewellery at the East London Sunday Upmarket. Eventually, the brand was built very organically with Maria doing the designing, jewellery-making, and campaign shooting with friends. And the orders started rolling in.

Today the Copenhagen-born, Danish-Irish designer creates contemporary, fine and fashion jewellery collections driven by the brand’s inclusive ethos, inviting individuals to explore and embrace their individuality in fresh and creative ways.

Inclusive ethos

Sets them apart

Maria Black is a multi-disciplinary global brand and the designer and in-house goldsmith team are the creators from start to finish. Everything is designed in Copenhagen. Their silver line is seasonal, and in addition to that Maria Black also designs and creates original piercing jewellery in 14K gold. Having this breadth of diversity sets this brand apart and the team is not afraid to test new crazy design ideas. They love exploring and evolving which is seen in the jewellery they produce.

“...jewellery are small wearable sculptures that represent an eternal investment, we are insanely proud to contribute to the Danish design heritage…”

Fluid, Bold and Modern

Design DNA

In everything the brand strives to communicate its intent to design wearable sculptural jewellery centred around the fusion of artistic expression and functional fashion. Emphasizing unique forms, innovative material use, and a blend of tradition with avant-garde elements, they try to reflect the times while also suggesting future iterations. But a common design DNA has always been a mix of fluidity and bold and modern designs.

Thoughts on

Social Responsibility

Maria Black is a brand that wants to “do good and be good to others”. This is emphasised by the way they source, create and present jewellery with quality, economic and social governance in mind.

This brand puts in a huge effort not to greenwash. They have a deliberate strategy to avoid words like ‘sustainable’ and ‘eco-friendly’ because anything you create is not sustainable for the planet. Instead, they aim to play a part in changing the narrative in the jewellery industry, from opaque to transparent, making sure all links in their supply chain benefits. One way is to live up to their responsibilities through longstanding relations with their team in India by paying the right price—not the lowest price for the craft.

Through extensive research, analysis and planning Maria Black built the base of the brand’s sourcing commitment. She developed the gold sourcing program (GSP) with the Fairtrade Foundation. Through GSP, Maria Black built a way to incorporate Fairtrade gold into their production. Maria Black supports Fairtrade miners with 30% of the entire production and the rest through recycled gold and silver. In 2021 the brand changed the diamonds used in their designs to Lab-grown diamonds.

We want to treat people and the planet with respect, inclusion and acceptance to leave a positive legacy. We want to give as much as our brand can. We believe that we are responsible for everything we put into this world and we will not compromise our quality or sourcing commitment.”
