NordbyThomsen was founded by goldsmith Mette Nordby Thomsen, whose creative universe is rooted in a fairy-tale world of her own making - a place called Nord, where elves play alongside unicorns and moon rabbits go on vacation, and where nothing is impossible. ‘
Based in Copenhagen, every piece is made in 14k and 18k gold with diamonds and fine details, drawing on Mette's deep knowledge of materials accumulated across years of working with leather, wood, plastic, lace, gemstones, gold, silver, and diamonds. The brand offers bespoke commissions alongside its collections, creating pieces with what Mette describes as a little extra stardust.

NordbyThomsen works in 14k and 18k gold, set with diamonds and finished with an attention to fine carved detail that runs through every piece. The collection moves between two distinct expressions: a first line of sophisticated, feminine designs, delicate chains with symbolic meaning, shaped or milled so the pattern appears as a cut, and rings that can be tilted and worn from multiple sides, and a second, more adventurous line where mini animal heads are transformed into bold statement rings with character and humour.

Mette is unafraid to mix materials or combine the delicate with the unexpected, bringing a breath of genuine experimentation to a traditionally conservative craft. Custom commissions are a significant part of the practice, with Mette working closely with clients from first idea to finished piece.

Mette Nordby Thomsen's creative process is guided by Snow, her muse, described as a snow fairy who lives at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen near the crown jewels and embodies the little spark of excitement felt when discovering something truly beautiful. When creativity runs low, Snow guides Mette back to Nord - her inner fairy-tale world - where she finds the magic that inspires her work. That imaginative framework is not decorative; it is a genuine working method.

"When Nord meets reality, something amazing happens," Mette explains. "My jewellery comes to life and I create pieces that bring a little fantasy and wonder to everyday city life." The result is a body of work that ranges from the elegantly minimal to the boldly whimsical, united by Mette's distinctive feeling for fine carved detail and her courage to experiment where other goldsmiths would not.

Her jewellery is simple and fine, without unnecessary complexity: nothing strange about it, just genuinely beautiful. And Mette herself is a joy to work with.
