Sofia Maria: Born from a childhood shaped by design thinking

Sofia Maria Jewellery is a Sydney-based fine jewellery brand founded by Sofia Maria Tomasella - a Buenos Aires-born designer who grew up in a family of architects before studying fashion and textiles and eventually following a deep pull towards jewellery as the most lasting form of making.
Every piece is hand-carved and handcrafted in Sofia's Freshwater studio using locally sourced recycled metals and responsibly sourced gemstones. Materials are sourced across Australia, with all metals mined or recycled by Australian foundries. Chains are the sole exception - sourced through an Australian supplier and crafted in Italy to the highest standard.

Australian Sofia Maria finally visited us in CPH to show her jewellery. Soft, organic gold with perfectly placed diamonds, and we were smitten instantly.

Sofia Maria Jewellery works in recycled precious metals - yellow, white, and rose gold - with responsibly sourced gemstones, hand-carved in Sofia's Sydney studio using a process she describes as quiet and intuitive. The aesthetic is shaped by the interplay of simplicity and intricacy: smooth, fluid lines and soft rounded forms sit alongside more complex diamond compositions, such as the Linden signet rings with their vintage feel and intricate settings.

East-west stone orientations appear throughout - the horizontal flow of an oval, as Sofia sees it, feels natural and elegant in a way that the conventional setting does not. Thicker bands and the presence of gold around stones are recurring choices, balanced with subtle variations in width and an artisanal flow that comes specifically from hand-carving and cannot be replicated through 3D processes. The philosophy of wabi-sabi runs through all of it: asymmetry, the marks of the maker, and the beauty found in imperfection.

Sofia Maria Tomasella was born in Buenos Aires into a family of architects - so she had a childhood shaped by design thinking, attention to form, and the belief that beautiful objects matter.

She studied fashion and textiles before beginning her creative career in bridal and evening wear, where she developed the eye for detail and craftsmanship that now defines her jewellery practice. She moved to Australia in 2016, and it was there that fine jewellery became her medium - something that felt, in her own words, eternal.

She still wears pieces from her grandmother Lala, and that sense of objects carrying history across generations informs every design decision she makes. Today she works from a light-filled studio in Freshwater, alongside her husband Tom and their dog Antonio, making pieces intended to be worn with ease, woven into the everyday, and held onto for life.

Every Sofia Maria piece is handcrafted using recycled metals wherever possible, with offcuts and filings gathered at the end of each day and returned to the bench to begin again - a closed-loop approach to production that eliminates waste at the making stage. All metals are mined or recycled by Australian foundries, and gemstones are responsibly sourced. Materials are sourced locally across Australia, with collaborative work entrusted to skilled master jewellers based in Sydney. Chains are sourced through an Australian supplier and crafted in Italy to the highest standard.
