Maria Nilsdotter: Confronting conventional norms

Maria Nilsdotter founded her eponymous brand in 2007, to create what she calls modern heirlooms - pieces in 925 sterling silver and 18k gold with pearls, diamonds, and gemstones, handcrafted by skilled artisans.

Based in her hometown of Stockholm, Maria Nilsdotter’s gothic and mystical universe have become a staple of the Swedish jewellery industry - worn by the Crown Princess Victoria on multiple occasions, amongst others. A timeless signature collection sits at the core, complemented by two seasonal collections per year and an exclusive capsule.

The opening edit

I was meeting Maria Nilsdotter to interview her, during my years as jewellery columnist. Her dark, storytelling-led universe swept me away instantly.

Maria Nilsdotter works in 925 sterling silver and 18k gold, set with pearls, diamonds, and gemstones, with recycled gold and silver used whenever available. The aesthetic draws from the melancholic Nordic landscape, Norse mythology, and a gothic sensibility that runs through every collection - wondrous creatures, dark undertones, and fantastical storytelling that gives each piece a narrative weight beyond its form. Rings, bracelets, and necklaces are all exceptionally sculpted, with a craftsmanship that makes every piece feel singular. Collections including Tarot and The Siren are among the brand's most distinctive expressions of this universe - each one a portal into a world of enchantment and mystery.

Maria Nilsdotter founded her brand in Stockholm in 2007 with a clear and unusual creative ambition: to make jewellery that confronts conventional norms, tells stories, and evokes the kind of beauty that transcends generations. The Nordic landscape and mythology she grew up with - their melancholy, their mystery, their extraordinary creatures - became the founding inspiration, and they remain central to every collection the brand produces. The immersive quality of the work extends beyond the jewellery itself: every touchpoint, from the physical stores in Stockholm and Gothenburg to campaign imagery and packaging, is conceived as part of the same storytelling universe. New pieces always complement the existing body of work, conceived as additions to a collector's ongoing relationship with the brand.

Each piece is inspired by an ever-progressing story; evoking transformation, encapsulating the emotional energy and personal symbolism imbued by the wearer.

It was a trip to Stockholm - during my years as jewellery columnist for Denmark's leading magazines, I was meeting Maria Nilsdotter to interview her, and the moment we walked into her store, the universe swept us away. Storytelling and concept work this thorough, we genuinely had not seen before: dark, mysterious pieces where edge and coolness are handcrafted into every detail. Her signature claw has become an icon in its own right over the years.
