A guide to gold hoop earrings

Hoop earrings represent a full circle, infinity, power and style. Wearing one can feel quite empowering. A gold hoop earring adds a sense of permanence. It will ever be in vogue for its association with warm glowing elegance and royal lustre.

Today the conventional round hoops have evolved into ovals, loops and sculptural shapes, thicknesses, textures, embellishments and sizes; all are designed with the utmost finesse to woo you and up your ‘style-spiration’.

Real gold or gold-plated hoops?

Many people ask us about the different types of gold hoops in terms of gold karats. And we have discovered that when some people ask for gold hoops, they mean gold-plated hoops. We’ll help you understand the difference between solid gold, gold vermeil and gold-plated hoops. This will tell you how to differentiate real gold hoops from gold-plated ones and why solid gold hoops are more expensive than gold-plated versions.

Solid gold hoop earrings

Pure gold is a soft metal that can be easily scratched and dented. So, pure gold is usually mixed with small amounts of other harder metals in jewellery making. Gold Karats: The purity of solid gold is expressed in terms of 'karats' (spelt with a K), which is not to be confused with the weight of a gemstone which is expressed in 'carats' (spelt with a C). The karat (k) number specifies the fraction of pure gold in 24 parts, mixed with alloys like silver, copper, or zinc to make it stronger and resistant to dents and scratches. Here you will find solid gold hoops in 8K, 9K, 10K, 14K, and 18K yellow gold, white gold and rose gold.

Gold-plated or demi-fine hoops

Gold-plated hoop earrings are more affordable than solid gold earrings. These hoops are crafted from sterling silver (also called gold vermeil), brass or copper and then coated or plated with a layer of 14K, 18K, or 22K gold. High-quality gold plating is done with a higher thickness, such as 1.5 to 3 microns. Gold plating tends to wear thin over time and requires careful use and storage. If it's your favourite piece, you may be able to get it re-plated if the design is plain.

Apart from gold plating, other demi-fine gold versions are gold-filled, gilding and gold paint.

What size and style of gold hoops should I get?

Hoop styles are intimately tied to size, and thickness as well as the design. Throw in some texture and unusual shapes along the hoop earring’s curve and you swing ‘unconventional class’. And how about a diamond-studded hoop in gold? Gold and diamonds in hoop earrings are super classy and make powerful statement accessories for the woman who knows her worth. Let’s take you on a quick hoop earring size-and-style tour.

Gold hoop sizes

Gold hoops come in many sizes; mini (huggies), small, medium and large. Big or small, gold hoops are a delight. Ranging from charming to striking and daring, you can create just the look you want simply by varying your hoop earring size.

Find your hoop earring size

Small gold hoops

You will find small gold hoop earring sizes starting with the mini-sized hoops and huggies. Cute little huggie earrings usually have an inner diameter of 0.8 to 3 centimetres (0.25 to 1 inch) when you measure from your piercing. Gold huggie hoops make great companion earrings for multiple piercing styles, including your ear helix and tragus piercings. They are also perfect sleepers - you can use them not just for daily wear, they can be worn comfortably even while sleeping.

Other small hoop diameters range from 2.5 to 3 centimetres (1 to 1.5 inches). These are meant for your lobe piercings and are lovely everyday-style earrings for a cool and casual look. Pair small gold hoops with studs, long earrings or asymmetric pairs to effortlessly nail the chic-casual look.

Medium gold hoops

We also have medium hoop sizes ranging from 4 to 5 centimetres (1.5 to 2 inches). Medium hoops are a step closer to bold and daring, highlighting your beautiful bone structure and confident smile! Medium gold hoops are a must-have for your everyday style mix.

Large and extra-large gold hoops

Inner hoop diameters greater than 6 centimetres fall into the large to X-large hoop category. Large gold hoop earrings make stylish and bold statements, drawing attention to your hoops and face. Celebrities like JLo love to sport these styles.

Thick gold hoops

Besides the size or diameter, you may also want to consider the thickness of the gold hoops. The thickness refers to how wide the hoops are in the “thread”. Chunky hoop styles include huggies and creole hoops which are usually thicker than medium and large hoops. Creole hoop styles are wider in the middle and slim at the ends.

Thick hoops add a bold dimension to your outfit. If you want to attract attention, go for the thick, chunky styles in gold hoops.

Thin gold hoops

Thin gold hoops are dainty in mini hoop and huggie sizes and elegant and sophisticated in medium to large sizes. The slim hoop thread thickness will be less than 0.4 centimetres.

This is a great way to dress down a bold outfit. Slim gold hoop earrings are a staple to add elegant sophistication and charm to your favourite styles.

Twisted gold hoops

Twisted gold hoops can have a beautiful rope or ribbon-like finish. Or they may be embellished with diamonds to highlight the twists and turns in the hoop thread. Or dotted with coloured gemstones for a hint of colour with the sparkle of gold.

This hoop style is often spotted on the red carpet and will be an excellent way to dress up for special occasions, office parties and moonlight dinners.

Sculptural and structured gold hoops

Hoops also come in various structured designs that add a dimension of texture and moulded patterns to the material of the hoop. Sculptural hoops are super stylish and stunning. These designer pieces feature bold contours and unusual textures, resulting in gorgeous works of wearable art.
