Gunnhild & Anne, Sisters and masterminds behind the Norwegian brand

Describe a perfect day for you?
I have to say a perfect warm summer day. Spending time with my family and friends, especially my son.

What do you dream about?
I dream that Hasla will be a leading jewellery brand both in Scandinavia and eventually worldwide.

What would you do if you won a million dollars?
Use the capital to expand our brand, and make it more international. I would personally love to travel the world for a year with my family. Work on designs, and get inspirations from other cultures.

Why did you choose to become a jewelry designer?
My parents founded the brand when I was a baby. I grew up in the workshop, and started to participate in the production at an early age. It is kind of random, though, that I became a designer. I studied art and wanted a creative career. In 2008, I designed a collection for the brand, and realised that I loved it! I have been the designer for Hasla ever since.

Describe the design DNA of Hasla?
We are down to earth and sustainable. We create timeless pieces with high quality. We represent “slow fashion” and hope our jewellery will be worn by generations. We focus on storytelling and the concept around every collection. Craft is very important to us. We have highly skilled goldsmiths in our workshop who develop and create all the prototypes.

Do you have a crazy habit?
I always have a lot of bits and pieces in my coat pocket. I pick up things on the ground, normally elements from nature. This is an important stage in my design process. Right now I have a chestnut shell and an interesting cork in my pocket. I like to feel the texture of the different elements.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Candy. Chocolate.

What is your must-have jewelry?
Earrings. I like that the trend is changing from small and minimal, to bigger statement earrings.

Do you have something you can’t live without?
My son

What would your occupation be if you weren't a jewelry designer?
I dreamed about being an artist.

What is your biggest achievement/moment in your jewelry career?
We were nominated for “costume-awards” in Norway. This is an important fashion award. Another big moment was when we made big statement pieces for Oslo runway. It was a collaboration with clothing designer Christina Ledang. It was extremely exciting to see our jewellery on the catwalk.
