Redefining Everyday Jewelry

Ennui Atelier was founded from a desire to design jewelry for breaking patterns.

“ENNUI means boredom in French, which is quite deliberate. The brand started as a reaction to repetition. The idea that getting dressed, or choosing jewelry, can easily become routine. I was interested in creating pieces that interrupt that feeling in a subtle way”, founder Sophie Antonsson explains.

Her aim is to design pieces for everyday life - pieces that you want to wear often and will combine over time - slowly building the way you express yourself. This sentiment is clearly visible in the jewelry designs, in the little swirls and symbols, the subtle sparkles as well as the larger statements - Ennui Atelier’s designs are everything but boring.

Sophie never planned to be a jewelry designer and started her career in fashion - but quickly realised she was more drawn to jewelry and its’ lasting qualities.

“What interested me was how something quite small can hold a lot of emotion, or even a sense of history. That became the starting point for ENNUI Atelier. I wanted to create pieces that are not just decorative, but something you return to and wear over time.”

Crafted to Last: Ethics, Materials, and Longevity

Ennui Atelier is committed to sourcing the finest materials while prioritizing ethical and eco-friendly practices, with each piece crafted in sterling silver or 9K, 14K or 18K gold. For their gemstones, Ennui partners exclusively with suppliers who prioritize ethical sourcing, ensuring that every gemstone used is obtained responsibly and contributes positively to the communities involved in their production.

Each piece made is also created to be worn for many years to come, with the intention of going through changes with the person wearing them. Sophie Antonsson explains:

“We have a strong focus on longevity. We avoid mass production and think a lot about how pieces live with the person wearing them. Not just how they look when they are new, but how they look years down the line.

Design Philosophy: Meaning, Inspiration, and Evolution

When it came to developing the design language for Ennui Atelier, Sophie drew inspiration from the power of three - a number with great significance in numerology, symbolising the three stages of existence: birth, life, and death. Today, a lot of the inspiration still comes from the world around her: architecture, a historical reference, or just a certain feeling.

That beginning, when it is all still a bit unclear, is her favourite part of creating jewelry, she explains - but there’s also something special with the moment a piece leaves the studio and becomes someone else’s.

“When someone else wears it in their own way. That’s when it becomes something more personal, and often more interesting that what I initially imagined”
