Maria Black is a Copenhagen-founded brand established in 2010 by its namesake designer and trained goldsmith. What began with Maria selling her own handmade pieces at Sunday Upmarket in East London has grown into a multidisciplinary global brand with stores in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Berlin, Oslo, and Tokyo, and a presence across more than 30 markets. Every piece is designed in-house in Copenhagen, and the collections span seasonal silver jewellery, a core 14k gold piercing line, and in-store piercing experiences carried out by highly skilled piercers. The brand is gender-inclusive by founding conviction, not by trend.

Maria Black works in recycled 925 sterling silver and recycled 14k gold, with lab-grown diamonds introduced across the collection in 2021. The aesthetic moves between fluidity and bold modernity, small wearable sculptures, as Maria describes them, that fuse artistic expression with functional fashion. Seasonal silver collections are produced only to order and exist for a season before giving way to the next; select styles move into the permanent core collection. The 14k gold piercing line runs alongside, designed for the ear and crafted with the precision of a goldsmith's hand. Signature pieces include the Brainjelly and Blue Morpho earrings, the Atlas and Dogbane necklaces, and the Zina and Vesta stacking rings.

Maria Black fell into jewellery making while living in Ibiza around 2003, and graduated as a goldsmith in 2009 before moving to London and starting to sell at Sunday Upmarket in East London. From there, stores discovered the work and agents approached her, and the brand grew, organically and at pace, built entirely on Maria's skills, creative vision, and willingness to learn everything else on the go.

When she launched in 2010, there were no mid-range jewellery brands operating in the fashion market with precious metals and a genuinely gender-inclusive point of view. Dressing men in pearl jewellery was unheard of. Dressing women in bold, sharp power jewellery was a statement. Both were simply what felt right to Maria and her team. The brand has evolved considerably since, and continues to do so deliberately, stopping every few years to examine what still feels true.

Bold and loud, her mom ring made a real statement for years. She was part of our Fashion Week shows, and the hype she generated was impossible to miss. Her piercing concept, and the sheer range of 14k gold earrings, are what caught our eye — and what our customers love most.

Maria Black deliberately avoids the words "sustainable" and "eco-friendly" — a considered strategy against greenwashing, built on the conviction that nothing created is truly sustainable for the planet. Instead, the brand focuses on transparency across every link in the supply chain. All silver and gold production uses 100% recycled metals. In 2021, lab-grown diamonds replaced natural diamonds across the collection. Through the brand's Gold Sourcing Program, developed in partnership with the Fairtrade Foundation, 30% of gold production is sourced from Fairtrade miners — with the remainder from recycled sources. The brand's longstanding production team in India is paid the right price, not the lowest price, and orders were honoured in full during Covid. The entire supply chain is guided by respect for people, planet, and the future.
