Bergsoe Jewellery: Decades of Sculptural Jewellery

Since founding her eponymous brand back in 1989, the critically acclaimed goldsmith and artist Josephine Bergsøe has been designing her distinctive and eye-catching, one of a kind pieces out of her Copenhagen atelier.
For Josephine, designing jewellery is not only about aesthetics - it is about creating works that connect to life's most significant moments and are worn with meaning. At Bergsøe, every piece is a chapter in a story, a symbol of something meaningful, and a reflection of who you are. Every piece is designed by Josephine herself and handcrafted in the brand's pavilion atelier by Kongens Have - a team of six dedicated goldsmiths who work closely with Josephine to bring her designs to life.

I met Josephine, the designer behind Bergsøe, as a jewellery journalistt years ago. Her curled, one-of-a-kind pieces are unmistakably personal.

Bergsøe’s designs are largely centred around her love of wide knowledge of gemstones - she sources them personally and they act as the starting point of most of her designs. The gemstones are set in sculptural and organic shapes crafted in 18K,22K or 24K gold or silver, - each piece a small work of art, chosen and shaped with the wearer's story in mind. Every form, every detail, and every stone is selected with care, resulting in pieces that carry meaning as much as beauty.

The design process is free and exploratory, opening again and again to new directions, which is why no two Bergsøe pieces are ever alike.

From the very start of her brand in 1989, Josephine Bergsøe has been driven by meaning - what her pieces can come to mean for its’ wearer.

Today, she still designs all her pieces herself - and spends time travelling the world to meet her suppliers personally, seeing where each gemstone and material comes from and ensuring everything is done right. She also connects to her customers in her small store and atelier on the corner of the King’s Garden park in central Copenhagen - a way to further her relationship to the people wearing her creations.

Over the decades, Josephine's work has been exhibited in leading galleries and museums in New York and Berlin, and has been worn by Halle Berry, Meryl Streep, and Nicole Kidman, as well as the Danish royal family. Her pieces have also been displayed in galleries across the world.

A piece from Bergsøe is meant to be a personal keepsake, a gift, a symbol, or a treasure that follows you through life and tells your story.

I met Bergsøe for the first time during my years as jewellery columnist for Denmark's leading magazines, and I fell in love immediately — not just with the jewellery, but with Josephine herself. Her personality is exactly what comes through in every piece: a curled, unpredictable universe, built by someone who loves imperfection but never compromises on quality. She's held onto her own expression for more than 30 years, trend or no trend. Understated, and one of the most inspiring people I know.

Responsibility is, in Bergsøe's own words, a natural part of everything they do. All metals and precious materials are recycled, and all stones are sourced from ethically responsible origins. The brand prioritises knowing its suppliers personally — visiting them to ensure that every material and process meets Bergsøe's ethical and sustainable standards. Jewellery designed to last a lifetime, made with materials and practices that reflect that same long-term thinking.
