Crystal - What is crystal
Crystal – ‘Ice of the Gods’
Crystal is the colourless transparent variety of quartz, which itself is the commonly occurring silicon dioxide that crystallizes into hexagonal prisms. The origin of the word ‘crystal’ comes from the Greek word, krustallos, which means ice, and it is indeed often referred to as the ‘Ice of the Gods.’ The world’s major quartz crystal deposits are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, Canada, and the United States.
For centuries, crystals were passed off as diamonds! When set in earrings, necklaces and bracelets, they are a beautiful and affordable alternative to real diamonds. You can recognize true quartz crystal from glass or lead crystal by its double refraction, which is the stunning optical effect that creates sparkle. With its high thermal conductivity, crystal is cool to the touch.
Crystal clear
Crystal, also known as rock crystal, is a pure quartz that is valued for its complete lack of colour and flaws. Other quartz varieties occur in almost every colour, such as purple amethyst, rose quartz, yellow citrine, to name but a few.
Crystals appear translucent to transparent and are colourless. This crystal-clear quality gave rise to its use in glassware, lenses, and prisms, not to mention crystal balls, in which even the future could be seen! Facet-cut crystals can have a colourless diamond-like appearance. Although their refractive index is much lower and they are therefore not as brilliant, they still have a beautiful sparkle.
Jewellers make wonderful use of this versatile clear stone in modern monochrome designs, or contrasted with black for a bold statement, as well as in pretty, whimsical pieces combined with multi-coloured stones.
Fascinating facts about Crystal
Rock crystal ornaments date back to 75,000 BC, and as such they are one of the oldest talismans, carried for their apparent magical powers.
Crystal is well documented for its healing properties for body, mind, and soul. It is known as the ‘master healer’ as it promotes the flow of positive energy and rids the body of negative energy. Crystals are said to stimulate the immune system, concentration, and memory, while restoring balance in the body.
Crystal traditionally marks the 15th wedding anniversary. Set in a bracelet, necklace, or pair of earrings, it is the perfect gift to celebrate this milestone occasion. Crystal measures 7 on the Mohs scale, and is therefore durable and resistant to scratches, making it well suited to use in jewellery.
