Gemdaia is a London-based fine jewellery brand founded by Shaz, a second-generation gemstone specialist whose family roots in Sri Lanka's sapphire trade run deep. After nearly a decade wholesaling fine loose sapphires to dealers and luxury houses across Hong Kong, Japan, and Sri Lanka, Shaz moved to London with a clear conviction: that the stone should lead, and the design should follow. The brand's name draws on the Greek deity Gaia — the ancestral mother of all life — a reference that speaks directly to Gemdaia's founding belief that gemstones should be accessible, sourced with deep respect for the earth they come from, and placed at the centre of every design decision.

Every piece is built around ethically sourced sapphires and precious gemstones sourced directly from Sri Lanka — one of the world's finest sapphire origins — and hand-selected by Shaz himself using the same rigorous eye for quality he developed working for some of the world's most renowned luxury jewellery houses. Shaz spent his career watching sapphires travel from Sri Lankan mines to cutting tables and then to the hands of dealers and luxury brands — and the more he understood the stones, the more clearly he saw what was missing. "I realised I should add more value by designing jewellery around these beautiful stones rather than design first and then use stones to work around the design," he says. That reversal — stone first, design second — became the founding logic of Gemdaia. By sourcing directly from sustainable mines in Sri Lanka and removing the middlemen, Shaz brings genuinely fine gemstone jewellery to market at a price point that reflects the brand's commitment to accessibility without compromise.
