Wouters & Hendrix: Bending the rules of fine jewellery

Katrin Wouters and Karen Hendrix, both graduates of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, section gold smithing, founded Wouters & Hendrix in 1984.
Every piece is handcrafted in the brand's own Antwerp atelier by a team of ten goldsmiths, working one floor below the design studio where Katrin and Karen sketch not on paper but in scraps of silver and copper - materials as the starting point rather than the finish. The atelier occupies the former storeroom of the Elixir d'Anvers liqueur distillery, and has been the home of the brand's making for four decades.

Wouters & Hendrix works across gold, silver, and unexpected combinations of materials and techniques, the exact combination always determined by the idea rather than convention. The aesthetic draws from surrealist symbolism, subversive art, and a love of the unexpected: intelligent, bold, and elegant without being safe.

Design begins at the workbench rather than the sketchpad, with Katrin and Karen tinkering and experimenting in metal from the first moment of a new idea. The team of ten goldsmiths then materialises those ideas using time-honoured techniques alongside innovative solutions, a combination that produces pieces with a distinctly handmade quality that mirrors the goldsmith's hand in every finished detail. Collections carry poetic names and exist within a broader creative world of prints, artistic shop windows, and idiosyncratic visual storytelling.

Katrin Wouters and Karen Hendrix graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1984, the same year they began their collaboration, with a shared ambition that was clear from the start: to produce jewellery that was elegant yet daring, intelligent and bold, exclusive as well as accessible.

In 1986, alongside the Antwerp Six, they took part in the British Designer Show in London, where their striking collections and self-built trade stands attracted international attention and helped ignite the global moment of Belgian fashion. Four decades later, the brand remains entirely in Antwerp, production entirely in-house, with the same conviction that jewellery should conduct a dialogue with art, surrealism, and the unexpected. Retaining production in-house is, for Wouters & Hendrix, not just a quality decision but a creative one — it keeps exceptional craft knowledge alive and allows for the kind of experimentation that defines every collection.

Wouters & Hendrix is one of Antwerp's best-known jewellery names — 'the jewellers behind the Antwerp Six,' as they're sometimes called, forty years at the intersection of jewellery and Belgian fashion. Katrin and Karen came out of the Royal Academy alongside the generation that became known as the Antwerp Six, and in 1986 took their work to the British Designer Show in London, helping put Belgian avant-garde fashion on the international map. They came to us wanting a platform where aesthetics and craft went hand in hand, and our link to the fashion world matched exactly how they wanted to be positioned. The jewellery itself is simply beautiful, real craftsmanship — it was an easy match.
